Do I need a doula?
You feel as ready as one can be! You’ve selected your doctor, the nursery is prepared, your hospital bag is packed, and your breast pump is on order! Then, someone drops a bomb and asks, “Did you hire a doula?” A what?!
And so, your research begins.
What is a doula? Do I need a doula for birth? Wait, there are also doulas for after I bring my baby home? What does a postpartum doula do? Wow! Do I really need a doula? I have my partner and my mom/sister/best friend. What can a doula do that they can’t, you wonder.
Do I need a doula for birth?
The answer is no! You don’t need a doula for birth. Nope. You don’t. You have the power to birth your baby all by yourself. Your baby will be born in one way or another and in majority of cases without any assistance other than a doctor or midwife to oversee the process.
Having an amazing birth doula can help to make birth a little brighter, sure! I’ll also play the Devil’s advocate here. Doulas who come with preconceived notions and ideas about what’s “best” or “right” in birth, or who take over your birth space because they know all the things can and often will leave you feeling inferior and viewing them as superior, the hero!

In my honest opinion (mom of four here), and in the opinion of other many other moms, a postpartum doula is one of the best investment one can make as they bring their baby home. A postpartum doula is essential to healing, bonding, and emotional wellness of the mother-baby and family!
