Why Moms Suffer Postpartum

Why Moms Suffer Postpartum

The reason that many moms suffer postpartum is threefold. I’ll be addressing an important topic that many people give very little thought to, the time period after giving birth. If while reading you feel like I’m talking to you in particular, it’s because I am! I have a heart for new parents and you are no different! The Jacksonville Baby Company knows and understands the postpartum culture in the United States well. Before you close this tab be sure to share this with your friends and in all your mom groups. Moms don’t need to suffer postpartum!

The first reason moms suffer postpartum: women aren’t a priority, we’re a minority.

Ouch, that stings a bit to say and to hear, I know, but it’s absolutely the truth. Among other things women are often paid less and our bodily autonomy is often encroached upon or threatened. Women are nurturers, often the peace-keepers of the family. It’s not uncommon for us to think of others before ourselves.

The focus always seems to be on our babies rather than on us, the mothers, the givers of life!

The “baby” shower, the birth of the “baby”, even bringing “baby” home. Everyone is there to celebrate and care for the baby, who will be there to care for and celebrate you, the mother? Who will make sure you are healthy and happy? You’ll endure approximately 40 weeks of rapid change, constipation, birth, bleeding, engorged breasts, stitches, staples, hair loss, night sweats, guilt, emotional exhaustion, and survive sleepless nights for days on end.

Study after study has proven that having skilled support and planning can help reduce perinatal mood disorders. So why aren’t more people investing in it?

Secondly, and to be frank, moms suffer postpartum because they’re choosing to make care after birth take a back seat while they prioritize other things.

Another reason moms suffer postpartum is that they prioritize other things more. Yes, more than getting off to a supported start after birth! They value things like, vacations! Moms suffer postpartum because parents value pricey baby gear that is mostly going to collect dust or get minimal use at best, maternity, newborn, and family photos, professional organizers, interior decorators, catering, game systems, hunting, boating, and tickets to exclusive events.

I understand that each family’s priorities will be unique to them, but can’t help but be saddened by the fact that we see so many moms value having a dream wedding over support postpartum. It isn’t until they suffer postpartum that they realize the true value and necessity of professional postpartum support.

I don’t want you to look back and say, “Hindsight is 20/20!”

Wouldn’t it be nice if others made you numero uno, nurtured you the way you need it, and thought about you in your biggest time of need; after you give birth?

The last reason why moms suffer postpartum; we simply aren’t proactive in our postpartum care.

Until you demand postpartum support and become proactive instead of reactive about your own wellness no one else will. Until you believe that having professional, skilled, hands-on support for yourself and your baby is a crucial part of your motherhood journey, no one else will either.

Professional postpartum care must become common place for all to feel a positive and lasting impact in our society.

What about those who truly can’t afford this type of service? I believe that once those who can afford it and those who choose to budget for it lead the way access to this service will become common place. So, for example. Formula. Formula use to be a status symbol for wealthy folks. So that began the formula trend. Poor communities gained more access or sought out the means to get the formula because it’s what the wealthy did. It was a status symbol! Now it’s those who are most educated and have the ability and access to it that breastfeed for longer and are typically more successful.

Every mama wants to get off to a great start!

It’s simply not enough to want it! You have to act on it! You need to lead the way to make the biggest impact! Do it for your babies and their babies. Do it for the women in your community. Do it for yourself, you are worthy!

Do you want to get off to a great start? Do you want someone you can turn to for help with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and even pumping? Are you thinking about the long nights ahead? Are you hoping someone will help you recognize early signs of trouble? Do you want someone to help get your baby use to the safest and healthiest sleep habits so you can sleep? Are you curious about caring for your body while you heal after birth? Are you looking for more than just a warm body who can do what you ask? Are you seeking someone who knows what to do, knows what “normal” is, and knows when you need to call the pediatrician? Does it matter if this person is skilled and experienced?

If you answered yes on repeat then take action! Walk the walk!

As one of our (super fun) clients said, “When I heard about the support your company provides I couldn’t be the askhole . . . You know, the person who asked for advice and help and then didn’t take it.”

Now that you know why moms suffer postpartum, will you prioritize this special time in your life? Will you be one to normalize needing support? For those of us who can hire and offer professional postpartum support, we should! We should be the ones to lead the way so that we can bring about change for ourselves, those who are disadvantaged, and for future generations. We owe this to our daughters!

So, what do you do?

#1: Prioritize & Budget for Professional Care By 30 Weeks

We typically book 6 weeks out with minimal last-minute availability. Booking early is recommended.

#2: Seek Out Professional Postpartum & Infant Care Support not a Nanny

Hire someone who can fill the position, not someone you have to train up! For the postpartum time period, a nanny won’t have the experience, training, or knowledge that a PP & IC Specialist does, period.

#3: Talk About It and Tell Others

Literally, nothing changes if you keep others in the dark about your postpartum time period. Don’t be embarrassed or scared to admit you needed help or received help. We ALL need help during this transitional period.

In closing, get in contact with us!

We have you covered, but only if you prioritize yourself. From a thoroughly written, fully customizable postpartum plan to helping you keep your home running smoothly, we’re on it! We are down in the trenches with you helping you figure out how to best utilize the resources you already have available to you. We will help you meet the physical and emotional demands new motherhood entails and make you look and feel better doing it.

The Jacksonville Baby Company takes the guesswork out of postpartum. The only thing left for you to do is prioritize it!

Cheers to a Support Postpartum Transition (if you prioritize it)!

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Jacksonville Baby Company

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: The Jacksonville Baby Company

We’re often the first people many couples share their special announcement with! Our clients excitedly share names they’ve come up with for their babies and many call us first when they’ve given birth! Now it’s our turn! [insert happy dance] We have a very special announcement to share with all of you!

Do you remember when you would think about what you wanted to be when you grew up? Remember the feeling you had when you discovered what you wanted to do with your life or even just the next chunk of time in your life?

First Coast Doulas is now The Jacksonville Baby Company!

We’ve totally outgrown our name and what it says about what we do! We’ve been fine-tuning our skills and perfecting what we’re already well-known for! Please help us say goodbye to First Coast Doulas and hello to The Jax Baby Company!

Our Team is Growing

Elizabeth, the owner of The Jacksonville Baby Company or Jax Baby Co. for short knows it will take a team to fulfill our mission! Each person on our team is hand-selected, thoroughly screened, and carefully trained to meet the needs of The Jacksonville Baby Company, our clients, and our community!

Preparing for Birth, Baby, and Parenting

We help you prepare with research-based, no bullshit education! Education for vaginal, cesarean, medicated, and unmedicated birth. So that you can shoot for the sky and land among the stars no matter what unfolds during the birth process!

Birth Is Just One Day

One very meaningful day! While we help you prepare for a satisfying experience no matter how your baby makes his, her, or their grand entrance we also understand the value and importance of preparing for the period of time after birth! The postpartum time period.

Postpartum is often used interchangeably with depression, “I had postpartum after my first was born.” A more positive postpartum experience begins with preparation!

Postpartum Recovery and Newborn Care

This is where families are often impacted the most for the longest period of time. So many things are happening at once: healing physically, changes emotionally, bonding, learning, adapting and adjusting just to name some of it. We’re experts in postpartum recovery and newborn care. Helping you and your family with emotional support, meals and snacks, showers and baths, sibling care, SLEEP, breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and light housework!

Scheduled Cesarean Support

We recognize that birth can be beautiful, scary, and empowering no matter how it happens, but we see a HUGE need for cesarean support in the Jacksonville area! As respected perinatal and postnatal support professionals in the Jacksonville area, our team is welcomed with open arms into many of the local hospital’s operating rooms. Because of the nature of cesarean birth (a major surgery), the environment is very controlled and must be for the safety of mom and baby, therefore not everyone gets this privilege. We are honored to support families welcoming babies via cesarean birth!

Jacksonville’s Safest Provider of Placenta Encapsulation Services

Placenta encapsulation is much more black and white than birth! There actually is a “safest” way to provide this service.  The Jacksonville Baby Company is the only provider in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia who offers the No-Doubt Guarantee to every client every time! In an unregulated industry where very limited studies have been done, safest practices, highest standards, training and certification is most certainly of importance.

Sleep Shaping and Sleep Training

Humans need a minimum amount of sleep to function and sleep is a key component to good physical, mental, and emotional heath. That is where The Jax Baby Co. comes in. No matter your babies age or your parenting style the Jax Baby Co. has ways to help you and your family get more restful sleep.

With the special announcement of The Jacksonville Baby Company, we want you to know that we provide the same amazing support we’re well-known for with a completely updated name and refreshing look and feel!

Check back here for some fun blogs to help you get to know our team better! We’ll also be covering some completely new and informative parenting and birth topics! Watch your inbox and our social media pages for engagement posts and dates and places around town for playdates and workshops!

So there’s the “skinny” on what’s happening here! The Jacksonville Baby Company provides exceptional support and inclusive care for families with babies in the Greater Jacksonville, FL area!

Top 5 Reasons to Have a Plan for After Birth

Top 5 Reasons to Have a Plan for After Birth | Jax FL Birth

Top 5 Reasons to Have a Plan for After Birth

There is a ton of value in preparing for life with a new baby. Elizabeth Luke, perinatal and postnatal support professional, childbirth educator, and owner of First Coast Doulas talks about the top 5 reasons to have a plan for after birth in place before you give birth to your baby!

Unlike birth, your postpartum time period is typically a little more predictable. Elizabeth suggests creating a plan now before you give birth so systems are in place and implementation is seamless. It brings our team great joy to support families as they make these life transitions. We absolutely hope you contact us to help you create and implement a plan, but you don’t have to hire support to make the most of early parenting!

Without further ado, we give you the top 5 reasons to have a plan for after birth in place now!

1.  Healing & Recovery

Physically your body needs a minimum of a full six weeks to recover and heal from the birth process.  Whether you had an uncomplicated vaginal birth, a planned cesarean, or an emergency cesarean your cervix and uterus most definitely need this time to heal and return to pre-pregnancy size.  You may feel like you’ve fully recovered and that is great! Sometimes emotionally we may need this time to grieve and heal as well. Give yourself time and permission to grieve, but also to take steps towards healing during this time.

Having a system in place allows you to eat healthy meals and snacks, stay hydrated, get as much sleep as possible (it is possible with support), put your feet up, relax, and get horizontal with your baby.  These things are super duper beneficial to the healing process, which brings me to #2 on our list.

2. Bonding

The day has finally come. Your baby is finally here. This is what you’ve been waiting approximately 40 weeks for! Bonding is important, not just bonding with your baby, but bonding with your partner, other children, and even extended family if you want those people in your lives at this point in time.

Learning all about the tiniest member of your family, helping each other, and discovering amazing things about your baby and each other along the way is the ultimate joy!

These moments only happen once! Take this time to bond, have a support system in place! Don’t let it pass you by, escape you, or overwhelm you which brings me to #3 on our list of the top 5 reasons to have a plan for after birth in place before the big day!

3. BIG Feelings

Without a doubt, you will have BIG feelings after you bring your baby home. It may be feelings of relief, bliss, happiness,  and joy! It may also be feelings of sadness, nervousness, inadequacy, or undeserving. These feelings can and do happen!

Having space and support system in place allows you time to process your feelings. Surprisingly, even if you’re a private, more reserved person, having a support person you feel comfortable with to discuss those feelings is invaluable. Truth is you probably don’t need another Suzy Sunshine trying to fix every damn thing, but rather a person who will validate your feelings, commiserate with you, and is prepared to offer you an objective perspective without judgment, W-H-E-N you’re ready! Our postnatal support professionals, also known as postpartum doulas or newborn care specialist are, in a sense like life coaches for the postpartum period.

4. For Your Partner/Support System

Yep, support for your support system! It’s totally a thing! If you have a partner they know you intimately. They love you and are likely feeling all the feelings too. Not only are they feeling all the feelings their also protector(s) and provider(s) and trying to find time to bond and engage with your newest family member!

Your partner is trying to make sure that you are:

1. healing

2. bonding

3. feeling okay

4. focused on baby and not them

And finally, that brings us to:

5. Practicality

While your healing, bonding, and caring for your sweetpea life moves on around you like the speed of toddlers. LOL Dishes dirty, meals must be prepared, appointments must be made, and tiny human clothes pile up quicker than you could ever imagine!

Having someone to run the vacuum, tidy up the playroom, and take the trash out is necessary to healing and recovery! Your practical support person(s) should help where they see help is needed. Grocery shopping, running errands, and getting the clothes folded and put into the drawers are all things that need to be done, your support system should be doing those things!

After you have a baby it is more than 100% okay to ask for help!

Postpartum support and planning is our specialty. If you or someone you know is expecting a baby, one of the very best gifts you can give a new family (yours included) is the gift of support! Whether you step up and help them, contact a support professional who can help them, or do both, know that your gift is the ultimate gift! Giving your time and energy to a new family so that they can heal, bond, and feel all the feels is priceless!

I want to give a very special shout-out to Heather Horrell who works with us here at First Coast Doulas and is also the owner of Grow Family. We originally made this video and it malfunctioned in the process of upload. Thank you, Heather, for caring so much and being a huge asset to families in our community!

The BIGGEST Challenges and Solutions After You Give Birth to Your Baby

The BIGGEST Challenges and Solutions After You Give Birth to Your Baby | Jax FL Doulas

The BIGGEST Challenges and Solutions After You Give Birth to Your Baby

The biggest challenges and solutions after you give birth to your baby are basic but impactful. Some of us become parents after years of anticipation and preparation. While others find ourselves with a happy little accidents running around! Either way, we love our little balls of energy and parenting is hard, but rewarding work.

One of our jobs as postpartum doulas is to help lighten the load even if only for a little while. From the time your baby is born, through those sleepless nights, and well into the first year and even beyond, we’re there to cheer you on! We help by offering an extra set of hands, an objective perspective, an ear, and at times solidarity.

Some of the absolute biggest challenges new parents face are:

Mom Guilt

It’s that feeling you get for eating over your newborn and dropping bits of food on him. It’s that feeling in your heart when you hear that pitiful little cry as you sneak away for a quiet cup of coffee on the patio. MOM GUILT! It starts with little things and grows to great heights if we don’t put it right in check!

Real Solution #1

Plan to take care of yourself in some way each and every single day from day #1 because it really is healthiest! Learn to say no to other things and to people and say yes to yourself more! You are worth it and deserve to be the best version of you that you can be!

P.S. It strikes harder when you’re expecting baby #2.

Postpartum Sadness

In your arms is the most adorable peanut you’ve ever laid eyes on. She is finally here and you can’t help but feel a little sad that your bump is now an empty space that once grew your sweet babe. It comes again as they outgrow those newborn sized diapers and begin to hit even the tiniest of milestones.  UGH! Little bouts of sadness and a tear or two now and again sure make a parent feel silly. Turn that silly sadness into something memorable!

Real Solution #2

Baby book those precious moments. Capture them using talk to text in an online journal or notepad on your phone. Be sure to get some photo documentation of those poop-splosions and tiny outgrown socks! Those moments are special and important and while they can strike a cord on our heartstrings from time to time they deserve to be cherished.

There you are half in the shower and the rest of you dripping all over the floor to reach the pacifier in the bouncer seat and shush your newborn. Everyone is back to work and their lives and you just want to get like Shania and “feel like a woman” again. Not a shaven woman, just a woman who smells like a woman!  We hear you and we love your dedication, but dry shampoo only gets a girl so far!

Real Solution #3

Have everything you need ready to go before you jump in the shower. Create a sleep space that is as safe as possible for your baby. Then feed, change, and burp the baby. Gently put him down in his crib and walk away slowly grabbing the baby monitor on the way out the door! Get into the shower and do the damn thang! Enjoy the water, let it wash over you like the rain on a summer day! Your baby may cry, but he will be okay. Your body’s biological response is to go to him. That’s normal but remember Real Solution #1.

It’s that forbidden 5 letter word. The one you would trade your favorite Jimmy Choo heels and maybe even your car for! S-L-E-E-P. The nights are long and the days are all blending together. Noone told you it was this tough…okay maybe they did and you were just oblivious because, well duh…you were still kidless with all the answers!

Real Solution #4

The short of it: get sleep! The long of it: Tag team and employ help! Let’s start with the closest player on your team. That might be your partner, your spouse, your mom, or your sister. What other adult is living in your home with you and is co-parenting your kids with you? Tag team! When one person tags in the other tags out! I know you want to team your way through this together, but the team can’t run on EMPTY! Refuel, rest, restart!

Real Life Solution: Employ a postpartum and infant care doula! We do all the things!

Naps during the day and more sleep through the night, heck yes, check! Showers, meals, and snacks, check, check, and check! Help understanding your newborn’s cues, normal behaviors, and breast or bottle feeding, you guessed it, check x3! Toss a load in the dryer, done! Sit and listen to your struggles, yep!! Unload the dishwasher while playing with Suzie and her baby doll, absolutely!

Let our team at The Jax Baby Company help you with the BIGGEST challenges and solutions after you give birth to your baby, our professional, down to Earth team have you covered! Real life solutions for real-life challenges!

How Can a Postpartum and Infant Doula Help Me?

postpartum and infant doula jax fl

How Can a Postpartum and Infant Doula Help Me?

You’ve heard the words postpartum and infant doula, but you’re wondering what exactly they mean together, what they do, and how can they help you?! First, you’re not alone! Most people have no idea what a postpartum and infant doula is. So breathe a sigh of relief you aren’t alone in the forest.

The word postpartum tends to get a bad rap.

Most people hear the word postpartum and immediately think of depression after a person gives birth.  Like prenatal and antenatal means during pregnancy, postpartum simply means the period of time after birth. Sure the postpartum time period can entail the baby blues, depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis, but it doesn’t always include those things.

A Postpartum and Infant Doula is a non-medical support person who is by your side after you have your baby!

While we can’t speak for all Doulas, First Coast Doulas are knowledgeable, trained, and skilled in compassionate care for families with babies!

While every family is different and their needs are unique there are challenges all new parents face. We add value to your family dynamics no matter what that looks like. Would you consider your family traditional, cool! Single parent home, you rock! Blended family, we love you all too! Polyamorous families, we see you!

So, how can a Postpartum and Infant Doula help?

Be it your first baby or your fifth sleep is a key component of good mental and physical health. We help parents get the necessary amount of sleep day in and day out!

Keeping up after baby is no easy task. Keeping the body fueled is another component of good health. We prep snacks and meals and bring it right to your bedside. We’ll even run out for your cravings! Life is busier than ever, we got you!

Emotional Support

Having a baby brings out all of the emotions. Your doula knows! We’re skilled in the art of emotional attunement! From weepy, raging, and numb to everything in between we see it, we recognize it, and we are comfortable talking about it and being there to see you through it!

You need to heal, rest, and care for baby. That doesn’t mean you should feel like an outcast or be confined to isolation. Ugh, we hear it all the time, “I feel so alone.” Your doula makes going out, or staying in more enjoyable. Your doula can tend to your baby while we all walk Target or grab lunch! On the flip side we can stay in, bake cookies, and watch your favorite episodes wth you too!

Team Work

A second set of hands, eyes, and a compassionate heart! We can wear your baby while you get a nap. Keeping him, her, or them soothed. We’re skilled in the art of toddler wrangling and bathing too! Calling in help doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it may just mean you are wise to value another compassionate human to give your babies attention too!

All this talk about self-care and no time for it sucks! Keep your hair appointment and book that massage, we’ll come along and keep baby happy and unwanted hands off! You can relax knowing that during a bubble bath or a phone call with your girlfriend on the patio your baby is with the very best and only a room away!

So, in short your postpartum and infant doula is like a magical unicorn! She appears when you need her most, anticipates your needs before you even know you need it, and she makes magic happen!

Laundry and dishes, done!

Laughs and a safe place to cry, she’s your girl!

Pizza and drink, just say wine or whiskey!

Ssshhhhh….it’s not really magic, but it sure feels like it! Contact our “magical unicorns” for a complimentary phone consult!

The Jax Baby Company

The Postpartum Doula’s Role

This is part 5 in 6 part blog series Titled; Guilt, Inadequacy, and Insufficient Funds

See bottom of page for details.

“Children are not a distraction from more important work, they are the most important work.”~ John Trainer, MD

postpartum doula role jacksonville

In the days after birth, everything is fresh, raw, and new, even for a third-time mom. Each woman, each family is in a place that is new, the family dynamics have changed. There is an in-between space that each family reaches and this in-between space is where a professional postpartum doula steps in as a gentle guide or just helping hands, with open ears and heart, and fill in the gaps in the lives of families with whom we work.

We are here and help you find your path to birth and parenting!

Each family’s needs will vary, as professional postpartum doulas, we are aware of individual needs within a family, but also the needs of a family as a whole. We learn your family’s needs and get to know each of you so that we can support you uniquely.

The Jax Baby Company understands that during the first year postpartum, especially the six weeks following birth, feelings of inadequacy and guilt, and functioning on little to no sleep can leave you in an odd, almost unreal place. We want every family to flourish, not just survive!

In those times when mothers feel unsure a postpartum Doula is there to listen and valid her feelings and concerns. We support mothers who are confident and know exactly what they’ll need and others who really aren’t sure at all, both are normal, we can be of great help to both.

At JBC our postpartum doulas don’t replace anyone; we work with the family to coordinate a plan for the postpartum time. We reassure the mother and father, help with bonding and assist the mom in being more comfortable. We will provide basic breastfeeding support and guidance.

In addition, we help facilitate a safe space for parents to talk about their concerns and ask questions about their newborns without fear or judgment. We assist with light meal prep and housekeeping, organizing baby things, help with outings, diapering, swaddling, feeding, and can help you in selecting products. We help connect families with other professionals for additional support for anything outside of our range of expertise.

We want every mother who desires a shower daily to get her shower; it’s a little slice of heaven in the day of a mother, uninterrupted shower and sleep! Precious sleep! We help new parents get that restful sleep, not just survival sleep, a key ingredient in a well postpartum!

We fill the gaps that parents know will be there and those unexpected potholes along the way!

Fathers may want to be more involved, but aren’t sure how to accomplish this or are nervous about caring for the baby. Sometimes they just need a little direction or for someone to talk it out with them. A father might have a hard time bonding with a baby. The postpartum Doula can make some suggestions to help the family during this time.

The entire family is experiencing an in-between and the postpartum doula understands that.

Siblings benefit from having a postpartum doula involved too. Becoming a sibling is big news! In fact, it can be so big that it’s overwhelming. The once-only child now shares both parents with his new sibling, his park days and play dates have taken a back seat to appointments, diaper changes, and feedings. With a postpartum doula, you have someone who can involve the older sibling, and give attention to their needs so they thrive in the new family setting.

There are times that parents seem emotionally absent or withdrawn, and other times they are all the feels. Doulas can help the family find their new groove! Having a postpartum Doula in the first six weeks after birth is the essential ingredient in your postpartum recipe!

The Jax Baby Company loves supporting families postpartum and we look forward to getting to know you and your family!

Elizabeth, owner of The Jax Baby Company is also a professional Placenta Encapsulation Specialists. Find out the benefits of placenta encapsulation and how having a postpartum Doula and PE Specialist in your home benefits you!
